Maite Mola: “Europe has to change radically its politics, condemning the genocidal actions of Israel against the Palestinians”
A delegation of the Party of the European Left (EL) visited the Gaza Strip to strengthen relations with left parties, syndicates and social associations in Palestine
A delegation of the Party of the European Left visited the Gaza Strip, from the 7th to the 9th of May, with the aim of knowing the situation of life of Palestine people in the field. 70 % of them live in poverty as result of the political decision of Israel to continually destroy the Palestinian resources of life, pushing them to an extreme misery a bit further every day as a meticulous surgical operation.
The delegation was formed by the vice-president of the EL, Maite Mola, and four members of the Middle East working group of the EL: Christine Mendelson (Front de Gauche, from France), Costas Isychos (Synaspismos, from Greece), Inger V. Johansen (Red-Green Alliance, from Denmark) and Karin Kulow (Die Linke, Germany).
During these three days, the work of the EL delegation in Palestine is been to strengthen the relationship with left parties in Gaza. They met with the Popular Front of Palestine (PFL), the Popular Democratic Front of Palestine (PDFP) and the Party of People of Palestine (PPP) opening windows for a deeper relation with the EL. All of them agreed on the idea that we have one common enemy, which is capitalism and imperialism, and that the only way to combat it, is through the union of the left in order to build up a strong counter power.
Other important encounters were made with the main syndicate in Palestine, a hospital and two women organizations, one of them focused on work for imprisoned women in Palestine.
The delegation also visited an educational centre for kids and youth, and a family victim of an indiscriminate attack with a bomb of 500 kg on its house by an Israeli F-16 last November. The bomb destroyed the house killing the dad of the family and two kids of 2 and 3 years old and very seriously injured the mother of the family as well as the daughter.
In the Gaza Strip 72% of agricultural land is located along the Israeli border. In this area Israeli soldiers shoot the farmers every day, sometime to scare them, other times to hurt or kill them. As part of EL denunciation of the situation, the EL-delegation operated like human shields in an action organized by the association Unadikum to protect the life of the peasants during the collection of the harvest. They also met with the organizations of fishermen of Gaza who is been shot everyday by Israeli navy with terrible consequences.
At the conclusion of the visit, the vice-president of the EL, Maite Mola, denounced that in spite of the constant violation, by the Israeli government, not only of the human rights but up to the proper right to life of the Palestinian people, the European Union keeps on maintaining preferable commercial relations with Israel itself turning into an accomplice. “Europe has to change its politics radically, condemning the genocidal actions of Israel against the Palestinians and preventing that the Israelis carry on land, sea and air attacks on the Palestinians with absolute impunity”.
Maite defended the right of the Palestinian people to live freely in their own country and appealed to the citizens of the world to participate in the important boycott campaign against products of Israeli origin and to put pressure on their Governments to defend the right of the Palestinian people to live in peace.
